Laura Holt, a private investigator acted out by Stephanie Zimbalist in the series Remington Steele, invented the title character as a fictitious male superior. She saw this as a way to avoid sexual discrimination because "a female private investigator seemed so...feminine." Citing the likes of Philip Marlowe, Sam Spade, and even Charlie Chan as examples, she once complained to Mildred Krebs that prospective clientele were unable to take a female private investigator seriously; she ranted in so complaining, "A woman couldn't function in that kind of world!"
But her former employers, Havenhurst Security, where she had apprenticed, are now believed to have actually forced her into staging the ruse because to them, she was apparently too self-seeking and teamwork-averse for them to permit her to succeed as a private investigator. Moreover, because California state laws prohibit obtaining private investigators's licences using aliases or in the names of fictitious persons, her licence was in danger of being revoked before an orphaned, nameless white-collar con artist assumed Remington Steele's identity. The start to which they got off was prickly, as Laura found nothing in common with the subject of her ruse and the said con artist.

Laura is extremely diligent, and searching for the truth is usually her only goal. If she senses that something is amiss or that there are loose ends that have not been tied up, then she will stop at nothing to solve, and close, the case...even if it means burying herself in paperwork.
